Popular identification app itsme® launches in the Netherlands and becomes the successor to iDIN

The most important news:
- As of today, itsme is available in the iDIN menu for the entire adult Dutch population. iDIN will completely make way for itsme by the end of 2027.
- itsme has the highest European level of assurance (eIDAS 'high') and is already used by more than 8 million Belgians.
Brussels, June 1, 2026 – Today, the well-known identification service itsme is launching in the Netherlands. The app will eventually replace the existing iDIN system.
At the end of 2025, itsme took over the iDIN service, allowing it to help millions of Dutch people identify themselves at hundreds of organizations all at once. It is expected that more companies in the Netherlands will join itsme in the near future. In Belgium, the app is a household name: over 80% of the adult population uses it to identify themselves online, with both businesses and the government, and more than 1 million identification actions are carried out daily. This gives it a status comparable to that of DigiD in the Netherlands.
“The challenge today is not technology, but trust and simplicity. Online trust starts with the certainty that your data is protected and that you know who you are doing business with. With itsme, we show that secure digital identification doesn't have to be complicated at all.” - Tom Van Den Bosch, CEO of itsme.
Next step for a digital Netherlands
iDIN was founded in 2016 by the Dutch banks to provide internet surfers with a secure way to identify themselves with other companies.
Aniek Berendsen, Director of Fraud at ING in the Netherlands: “For years, Dutch people have relied on iDIN for secure online identification. With itsme, we are taking the next step together: a solution that complies with European regulations and responds to the growing need for innovation and ease of use. itsme helps people navigate an increasingly digital society with confidence and makes the secure online use of services simpler, without unnecessary friction.”
